Doorway to the Five Lands (Cinque Terre)

A typical medieval village situated in the western end of the Gulf, with its rock-houses, Genoa castle and St.Peter Church overhanging the sea, joins the charm of the "finis terrae" with a distinguished history. From 1997, Portovenere has been declared World Heritage by the UNESCO. The Name of the village (Portus Veneris) comes from a temple dedicated to the goddess Venus situated exactly where today stands the church of St. Pietro. The name has traditionally been linked to the fact that the goddess was born from the seafoam under the promontory…. Or else we like to believe it because Portovenere was a wonderful and romantic village also then.
